I'm a sucker for picking up castoffs to refurbish them for a greater purpose. The landfills are full of gently used stuff.

Target: Pegboard shelf left out on a curb

Requirements:

  1. Be free, or almost free

  2. Be in reasonably good condition

  3. Fit in a specific space

  4. Lend itself to the industrial style

Tools and Materials Needed

Screwdriver

Sand Paper and Sander

Rustoleum Brand Black Spray Paint for Metal

Good Ventilation or Oscillating Fan

Sponge

Pencil

Disposable Mask

Disposable Rubber Gloves

Clean Dry Rag

Dremel or Drill

Oil or Water Based Polyurethane

Foam Dinner Plate or Small Paint Tray

Blue Painter's Tape

Paint Brush

Drop Cloth

Painter's Coveralls

Saw Horses

Pegboard Accessories Like Baskets and Hooks

Eye Covering

Liquid Detergent and Water

Steps:

  1. Put on protective clothing, gloves, and eyewear.

  2. Dismantle the shelf.

  3. Separate the metal frame pieces from the wood (Keep hardware screws in a safe place)

  4. Sand down the wood, metal rust spots, and scrape off any old flaking paint.

5. Wipe down and clean all the pieces. (I simply cleaned it with some Ajax Liquid detergent and water to remove any dirt and grime.

6. Dry all surfaces with a clean fuzz-free rag.

7. Mask hardware to be painted with painter's tape.

8. Spread out the sprayed pieces on a painter's tarp/plastic to dry.

9. Apply stain to the prepared wooden shelves and let completely dry.

10. Reassemble the shelving unit.

Note: Always use protective clothing and eye protection before any restoration project.

Tip: I don't throw away old towels or old cotton t-shirts. I cut them up and keep them in a plastic bag in the garage, on my metal tool shelf for home improvement tasks.

Voilà! A much-needed project. Completed and loved!

Have a wonderful week!
